The Zac Team @ Atlanta CommunitiesIn Decatur, you'll find a traditional small-town atmosphere -- and the sophistication and excitement of a college town -- along with all the benefits of living in a major metropolitan area.
The City of Decatur prides itself on the diversity of its population, housing types, restaurants, and shops. Within the area, several neighborhoods have formed their own neighborhood associations. One of the most visible of these neighborhood groups is Oakhurst, which takes up much of Decatur south of the railroad tracks running alongside College and Howard Avenues (check out their awesome Oakhurst Community Garden here!).
Note that Decatur's children are served by Decatur city schools, but residents of Avondale Estates and areas outside of the Decatur city limits are served by the DeKalb County school system. For great, free info on schools throughout Atlanta, just click the school below!
The center of Decatur, both geographically and culturally, is what everyone calls "The Square" (officially "Court Square") at the intersection of Clairmont, E. Ponce de Leon, and McDonough. There you will find the current DeKalb County Courthouse, the old courthouse which now houses the DeKalb History Center, the Decatur MARTA Station, and many shops and restaurants. It has a real urban feel, yet it is graciously landscaped and secure. The Bandstand hosts many concerts, and the series, Concerts on the Square is a "must-visit."
Looking for local food? Be sure to check out the Decatur Organic Farmers' Market every
Wednesday and Saturday (hours vary with the seasons and daylight). Support your local farms and small businesses!
Downtown Decatur has a
wonderful habit of attracting new restaurants that manage to combine great
design and great food. For a sense of the sheer variety available, just take a
stroll around the Decatur Square!
Downtown Decatur also has more than its
share of eclectic and edgy merchandise for sale. There is an abundance of Decatur businesses to give you your Decatur
shopping fix.
Looking for the music scene? You'll find it at Eddie's
Attic which has been giving unplugged singer-songwriters exposure for
years. You will hear performers at this cozy bar-restaurant that will appear
nowhere else in the area. The Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, and John Mayer got
early exposure here.
